The label on a listing is not a measured result. Both “Clean” and “VSF” are discussed in enthusiast circles, but a universal winner cannot be established without model-specific, current evidence.
This is a comparison framework, not the outcome of a laboratory test. We have not independently measured factory output or verified a seller's factory attribution.
A better way to compare
Start with the exact model reference. A statement about a particular Submariner version does not automatically apply to a Daytona or Datejust, and a favourable result from one batch does not establish uniform factory performance.
| Criterion | What sellers may claim | Evidence worth checking |
|---|---|---|
| Case / bracelet | Particular alloy, close tolerances, refined finishing | Macro photographs of lug transitions, clasp edges, bracelet fit and measurement notes |
| Bezel | Correct hue, engraving, rotation and alignment | Neutral-light photos, straight-on shot and, where relevant, repeatable rotation tests |
| Dial | Reference-accurate printing and alignment | Sharp photographs showing markers, rehaut, date aperture and hand clearances |
| Movement | Named calibre or so-called clone architecture | Actual movement identification, dated video, functional checks and service access |
| Consistency | Factory-wide quality | Evidence tied to the *specific* watch and production batch rather than a generic listing |
What 904L steel does—and does not—prove
“904L” refers to a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel family. The marketing term alone does not verify material composition, machining tolerance, corrosion performance or surface finish. Without objective material verification, treat unsubstantiated steel claims as unverified.
A repeatable inspection protocol
- Request photos of the exact unit, taken under diffuse daylight and a fixed camera angle.
- Record the reference number and any stated movement identification.
- Compare observable details against reliable reference photographs.
- Check each functional control; separate a visual impression from a timing measurement.
- Document unresolved inconsistencies rather than averaging them into a single “grade.”
Bottom line
Factory names can help categorize claims, but no label substitutes for authenticated provenance, consistent manufacturing evidence or a documented inspection. The risk of trademark infringement and misleading origin claims is separate from mechanical quality.
